Spring is a season of milestones. Caps and gowns, college acceptance letters, first jobs, and big decisions, it’s a time filled with pride, anticipation, and, for many families, an undercurrent of stress.

At River’s Bend, we see this moment for what it truly is: not a single outcome to measure, but a transition worth honoring in all its forms.

Whether a young person is heading to college, entering the workforce, pursuing a trade, or taking time to discover their path, each step forward represents growth, resilience, and courage.

The Hidden Pressure Behind “What’s Next?”

“For adolescents, graduation often comes with an unspoken weight. Where are you going? What’s your plan? Did you get in?,” said Amy Fresch, River’s Bend Clinical Director at our Troy location.

“These questions, while often well-intentioned, can amplify anxiety, especially in a culture where college admissions have become intertwined with identity and social status,” said Fresch.

When teens compare themselves to peers or feel they’ve fallen short of expectations, it can lead to:

Increased anxiety and self-doubt

Feelings of inadequacy or shame

Depression during what should be a celebratory time

Parents, too, feel this pressure. The desire to see their child succeed can sometimes translate into heightened expectations, expectations that adolescents are already placing heavily on themselves.

But here’s an important truth worth remembering:

Once someone graduates, the question of “where did you go to school?” quickly fades. What endures is who they become, not where they started.

Redefining Success for Our Young People

Success is not a single path. It is not defined by a college name, a ranking, or comparison to others.

It is defined by:

Emotional well-being

Personal growth

Purpose and direction

The ability to adapt and thrive

As families, shifting the conversation from achievement to well-being can make all the difference. Supporting adolescents means celebrating effort, honoring individuality, and creating space for them to define their own futures.

The Role of Support Systems, At Home and Beyond

For many young people, especially those impacted by family substance use or mental health challenges, this transitional period can feel even more complex.

That’s why partnerships matter.

River’s Bend is proud to work alongside the National Association for Children of Addiction (NACoA), an organization dedicated to supporting the millions of children affected by family addiction.

Together, we are committed to ensuring that no young person navigates these challenges alone.

At the heart of NACoA’s mission is its CEO, Denise Bertin-Epp.

Denise’s vision is both urgent and compassionate. She recognizes that:

One in four children grows up in a family impacted by addiction

Substance use disorders have intensified in recent years

The need for accessible, effective treatment and support has never been greater

Her leadership reflects a deep commitment to breaking cycles of silence and stigma, ensuring that children and families receive the care, understanding, and resources they deserve.

We value not only Denise’s expertise but the authenticity and heart she brings to this work. Our leadership team shares a close, collaborative relationship with her, rooted in mutual respect and a shared mission to protect and uplift young people.

Our working collaboration with NACoA is more than organizational—it’s mission-driven.

Together, we are:

Advocating for early intervention and family-centered care

Expanding access to adolescent outpatient treatment

Raising awareness about the impact of addiction on children

Celebrating resilience in young people during critical life transitions

In the video below, Denise shares why NACoA partners with River’s Bend and the importance of providing specialized outpatient care for adolescents during pivotal moments like graduation.

A Message to Parents This Season

As your child approaches graduation, consider what they need most from you right now. Rather than pressure, comparison, or perfection, they thrive on reassurance that their worth is not tied to a specific outcome. Give them space to explore their path without fear of judgment, and recognize that this moment is a massive achievement. Finally, make sure they have permission to ask for help so they don’t have to navigate difficult emotions alone.

This season can also be an important opportunity for both parents and young adults to seek support and guidance. Working with a therapist can help parents gain clarity on how to be a healthy, supportive caretaker during a major life transition while also managing their own fears, expectations, and emotions.

For teens and young adults, therapy can reinforce an important lesson early in life: struggling does not have to happen in isolation. Learning how to ask for help, process uncertainty, communicate openly, and build a support system are skills that can strengthen emotional resilience well beyond graduation.

Sometimes the healthiest thing a family can do is acknowledge that everyone is navigating change together and that support is a strength, not a weakness.

Your support, understanding, and perspective can be the difference between a stressful transition and an empowering one.

The Graduation Transition Toolkit: A Mental Health Guide for Teens and Families Facing Life’s Next Chapter

Created by Stephanie Howey, LMSW, this guide provides:

Practical coping strategies

Conversation starters

Tools to navigate uncertainty with confidence

Download The Graduation Transition Toolkit For Free

Celebrating Every Path Forward

This spring, we celebrate all graduates. Some are heading off to college, while others are entering the workforce immediately. Many are still taking the time to figure it out.

Ultimately, every path forward is valid, and every single step represents meaningful growth.

At River’s Bend, alongside our partners at NACoA, we remain committed to supporting adolescents and families, not just through graduation, but through every stage of growth that follows.

Because success isn’t about where you go.

It’s about who you become, and knowing you’re supported along the way.

Structured Support When Teens Need It Most

When a teen is struggling with their mental health, families often feel overwhelmed and unsure where to turn. As a result, many parents in West Bloomfield, MI and surrounding communities face the added challenge of finding specialized adolescent mental health care that is both trustworthy and developmentally appropriate.

Fortunately, at River’s Bend PC, our Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) provides a critical level of care for teens who need more support than weekly therapy. At the same time, it allows adolescents to remain connected to home, school, and family, without requiring full hospitalization.

What Is Adolescent IOP?

In short, our Adolescent IOP in West Bloomfield is a structured outpatient mental health program designed specifically for teens. The program meets three times per week for three hours per session, typically over 6 to 8 weeks.

This level of care is especially helpful for adolescents who:

Need more support than weekly outpatient therapy

Are stepping down from inpatient or residential treatment

Are struggling academically, socially, or at home

Are experiencing increased anxiety, depression, trauma symptoms, or emotional dysregulation

During treatment, group sessions are led by licensed adolescent therapists and focus on:

Emotional regulation and distress tolerance

Healthy coping strategies

Communication and boundary setting

Self esteem, identity, and confidence

Peer relationships and family dynamics

Additionally, we offer in person and virtual Adolescent IOP options, allowing families across West Bloomfield, Oakland County, and Southeast Michigan to access care in a way that fits their schedule.

Why Families in West Bloomfield Choose River’s Bend

Beyond location, our West Bloomfield adolescent mental health program is known for its calming environment, experienced clinicians, and individualized approach. Because of this, teens receive care in a space where they feel safe, respected, and understood.

More importantly, families choose River’s Bend because we provide:

Adolescent focused mental health treatment

Collaborative care involving parents and caregivers

Flexible scheduling that works with school and activities

Coordination with school counselors and pediatric providers

Dual diagnosis support for teens with mental health and substance use concerns

Over time, parents often share that River’s Bend was the first place their teen felt truly heard, and where they finally felt supported as caregivers.

Family Involvement in Adolescent IOP

Equally important, we believe family involvement is essential to long term success. For this reason, our Adolescent IOP includes family support through:

Family therapy sessions

Parent education on adolescent mental health

Tools to improve communication and reduce conflict

Guidance for supporting recovery at home

Whether your teen is newly diagnosed or transitioning from higher levels of care, we help families understand their role and feel confident throughout the process.

Getting Started With Adolescent IOP in West Bloomfield

When you reach out to River’s Bend PC, our team completes a brief, confidential intake assessment to determine whether Adolescent IOP is the right fit. If appropriate, we then coordinate care quickly and guide your family through next steps.

Finally, we accept most major insurance plans and provide compassionate, confidential support from the very first call.

If your teen needs more support, you do not have to navigate this alone. River’s Bend is here to help.

By River’s Bend Clinical Team
With insights from Bruce Goldberg, President, and Jessica Hillen, Clinical Director at River’s Bend

Recognizing the Seasonal Surge

Every year, January is inaccurately portrayed as the “peak month” for suicide. While suicide rates don’t statistically spike this month, seasoned behavioral health professionals recognize a different, and equally pressing, reality: January may be when the pressure begins to mount.1

“We see a real uptick in distress, not always crisis, but a buildup: emotional, psychological, and behavioral. And if that goes unaddressed, we see the fallout in the spring,” explains Bruce Goldberg, President of River’s Bend. “It’s what our Clinical Director, Jessica Hillen and I refer to as the ‘crisis curve,’ and January is where that curve starts to steepen.”2

Several compounding factors drive this surge:

Post-hospitalization vulnerability: Patients discharged from inpatient or emergency care during the holidays often return to environments that haven’t changed, and without step-down support, they destabilize.

Holiday alcohol use turning habitual: What begins as celebratory drinking over the holidays can escalate into dependency.

Teens and young adults: Returning to school after a break can reignite academic, social, or emotional stressors.

Financial strain and grief: From holiday overspending to seasonal grief triggers, many individuals quietly spiral after the new year.

As these pressures build, referral partners become critical allies in identifying the earliest signs of relapse or emotional dysregulation. This is where targeted outpatient support, like River’s Bend’s IOP (Intensive Outpatient Programs), plays a key role.

The Problem with Generalized Treatment

For many referral partners, school counselors, discharge planners, EAPs, and physicians, connecting a client to the “right” level of care is complicated by the lack of specialized outpatient options. Too often, clients are referred to programs that:

Are too broad to meet specific needs

Lack clinical depth for dual-diagnosis clients

Bridging the January Gap: When to Refer

IOP provides a critical middle step in care, between weekly therapy and hospitalization. In January, this is especially vital for:

Patients recently discharged from inpatient or residential care after the holidays

Clients whose symptoms have intensified over the holidays

Individuals struggling with motivation, mood, or substance use

Those who need more structure but not inpatient care

Referral partners should be alert to signs like:

Escalating alcohol or cannabis use

Regressive behavior or avoidance in teens

Mood instability, irritability, or fatigue

“Resolution regret”—clients feeling shame or discouragement for failing New Year’s resolutions (link to Jan client facing blog)

Fast-Tracked Referrals & Support

We recognize how time-sensitive referrals can be in January. River’s Bend offers:

Same-day phone screenings

48-hour assessments

Urgent slots for school and EAP referrals

At River’s Bend, we believe behavioral healthcare works best when it’s collaborative. Our goal is not just to treat symptoms but to build stability and connection before crisis hits.

Whether you’re a therapist, physician, school counselor, or HR/EAP lead, your early referrals can help prevent the spike in crisis calls that often arrives in spring.
