For many individuals and families, the decision to seek treatment for substance use doesn’t happen all at once, it builds over time. What often starts as concern gradually becomes urgency. And when that moment comes, one of the hardest questions can be: Where do we go from here?

That’s where strong partnerships matter.

For years, River’s Bend and Henry Ford Maplegrove Center have worked closely together to support individuals at different stages of recovery. While Maplegrove provides medically supported detoxification, residential treatment, and addiction stabilization, River’s Bend helps many patients continue their recovery journey through structured outpatient care after discharge.

Together, the two organizations help create something that is critically important in behavioral healthcare: continuity.

A long-standing leader in addiction treatment

Henry Ford Maplegrove Center has been a recognized name in addiction treatment in Michigan for more than 40 years. The facility offers a full continuum of substance use treatment services, including:

Detoxification

Residential treatment

Medication-assisted treatment

Individual and group therapy

Family support programming

Their clinical approach is rooted in evidence-based care while also recognizing that recovery is deeply personal.

Christine V. Reeves, LMSW, who works closely with patients and referral partners at Maplegrove, explained that patient-centered care has always been central to the organization’s mission.

“We don’t have a set requirement for how many days someone needs to be in treatment. Length of stay is patient-centered and based on individual needs.”

That flexibility allows treatment teams to focus less on timelines and more on helping people stabilize physically, emotionally, and psychologically.

What addiction treatment actually looks like

For many people unfamiliar with residential addiction treatment, the process can feel intimidating or uncertain. Christine emphasized that one of Maplegrove’s priorities is helping patients feel safe and welcomed from the very first phone call.

“People are so afraid to call,” she said. “Our intake team does an incredible job relieving anxieties as much as they can and helping patients feel supported before they even arrive.”

Once admitted, patients move through medical and clinical assessments before beginning treatment programming. Care often includes:

Medical detox and stabilization

Individual therapy

Group therapy

Psychiatric support

Peer recovery support

Recovery community meetings

Maplegrove also offers exposure to multiple recovery pathways, including AA, SMART Recovery, Dharma Recovery, Gamblers Anonymous, and peer recovery coaching.

Importantly, treatment is not limited to group work alone.

“There are things people are not going to talk about in front of everybody,” Christine explained. “We have a high concentration on individual therapy, even while patients are inpatient, and I feel proud that we can provide that.”

Treating mental health and substance use together

Substance use disorders rarely exist in isolation. Many individuals entering treatment are also navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, or other mental health conditions.

Maplegrove’s treatment model is designed with that reality in mind.

The program incorporates DBT-informed treatment, psychiatric support, individualized care planning, and therapy approaches that address both addiction and mental health simultaneously.

This integrated approach reflects what research continues to show: treating co-occurring disorders together leads to stronger long-term outcomes than treating each issue separately.

Recovery does not end at discharge

One of the biggest misconceptions about addiction treatment is that recovery is complete once someone leaves residential care.

In reality, discharge is often the beginning of the next phase.

At Maplegrove, aftercare planning starts immediately.

“Aftercare planning starts on day one,” Christine said. “We already have it in the background from the start, and then we narrow down what’s going to be the best fit for that client.”

That next step frequently includes outpatient treatment programs like those offered at River’s Bend.

Why the partnership with River’s Bend matters

The relationship between Maplegrove and River’s Bend is built on direct communication, shared trust, and a mutual commitment to patient care.

When a patient is preparing for discharge, the teams coordinate closely to ensure the transition feels as seamless as possible.

“If there’s anything River’s Bend needs to know—or anything we need from them—we contact Leah, Bruce, Jessica, Amy, or the team directly,” Christine explained. “We have clear communication and direct access to each other because we want the transition to go as smoothly as possible for the patient.”

That level of coordination matters more than many people realize.

Transitions between levels of care are often vulnerable moments in recovery. Without structure and follow-up support, the risk of relapse increases significantly. Research from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) consistently shows that continuity of care improves treatment engagement and long-term recovery outcomes.1

River’s Bend helps bridge that gap by providing Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) that allow individuals to continue structured treatment while returning gradually to everyday life.

Christine noted that River’s Bend is often able to get patients connected quickly after discharge.

“River’s Bend does a great job getting our clients in within five to seven days—usually even sooner than that,” she said.

Trust matters in referral relationships

For patients entering recovery, trust is everything.

Christine described how referral partnerships help reduce uncertainty for individuals who may already feel overwhelmed by the treatment system.

“Patients want to know who you trust for them to go to next,” she explained. “If Maplegrove says they can trust River’s Bend, the hope is that patients feel more comfortable and open to receiving care there too.”

She also emphasized that strong partnerships are built through real relationships, not just referral lists.

“I only feel comfortable referring people to places and providers I actually know,” she said. “I want to know what kind of care they provide and whether they truly care about the patient.”

That shared philosophy is one of the reasons the partnership between River’s Bend and Maplegrove has remained strong.

A connected approach to recovery

Recovery is rarely linear. Many individuals move through different levels of care over time, depending on their needs, progress, and life circumstances.

What matters most is having providers who work together instead of in isolation.

The partnership between Henry Ford Maplegrove Center and River’s Bend helps create a more connected experience for patients—one where treatment does not feel fragmented or impersonal, but coordinated and supportive from one stage to the next.

For individuals and families facing addiction, that continuity can make all the difference.

Fortunately, the everyday habits that improve mental wellness are often simple, manageable, and grounded in consistency.

Tiny Changes, Meaningful Impact, and Support When You Need It

Have you ever promised yourself that this would be the week you finally changed everything?

You planned to wake up at 5 a.m., meditate for 45 minutes, prepare every meal, run five miles, journal each day, and drink a gallon of water.

Then Wednesday arrived, and you found yourself eating crackers over the kitchen sink.

Welcome. You are human.

The good news is that mental wellness does not depend on perfection. Instead, it grows through small and consistent actions.

Research suggests that repeatable behaviors can strengthen emotional resilience, improve mood, and help people manage stress over time.1

Fortunately, the habits that support mental wellness are often simple.

With that in mind, let’s begin there.

1. Keep a Consistent Sleep Routine

Sleep affects almost every part of your well-being.

For example, it can influence:

Mood

Concentration

Stress tolerance

Decision-making

Relationships

However, sleep is often the first thing people sacrifice when life becomes busy.

You do not need to completely change your routine overnight. Instead, begin with a few manageable steps:

Go to bed and wake up at about the same time each day

Reduce screen time before bed

Create a calming bedtime routine

Limit caffeine later in the day

Sleep problems are common among people experiencing depression, anxiety, ADHD, substance use concerns, or emotional distress.2

At River’s Bend, our Mental Health Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Psychiatric Services, and Adult Counseling Services often help individuals rebuild healthy daily routines.

In many cases, improving sleep becomes an important part of that process.

2. Move Your Body, Even for a Few Minutes

In addition to better sleep, regular movement can also support mental wellness.

However, that does not mean you need to train for a marathon.

Physical activity may help regulate stress hormones, improve sleep, and support a more stable mood.

For example, movement can include:

Walking the dog

Gardening

Dancing in the kitchen

Stretching between meetings

Parking farther from the entrance

Taking a short walk during lunch

Every small amount of movement counts.

Furthermore, movement may become a helpful coping strategy for people participating in Early Recovery Groups (ERG), Substance Abuse Intensive Outpatient Programs, or Health Professional Recovery Program services.

Over time, regular movement may support both emotional wellness and long-term recovery.

3. Practice the “One Person” Rule

Along with sleep and movement, connection also matters.

Social support can protect emotional well-being and help people cope with difficult situations.

Therefore, try to connect with at least one person each day.

For instance, you might:

Text a friend

Call a sibling

Spend time with your spouse without multitasking

Ask your teenager a thoughtful question

Check in with a trusted coworker

Connection does not need to be complicated.

Instead, it simply needs to be intentional.

For many people participating in Adult Mental Health Counseling, IOP, PHP, ERG, or specialized recovery programs, reconnecting with others becomes an important part of healing.

4. Notice What You Are Putting Into Your Mind

Just as physical habits matter, emotional input matters too.

Many people pay attention to what they eat. However, fewer people notice what they consume emotionally.

Take a moment to ask yourself:

How much time am I spending doom-scrolling?

Do certain social media accounts leave me feeling worse?

Am I consuming content that increases my anxiety?

Have I made enough room for humor, joy, or inspiration?

Mental wellness does not require you to ignore difficult events.

Rather, it involves balancing awareness with emotional protection.

For example, you may decide to limit news alerts, unfollow stressful accounts, or take regular breaks from social media.

As a result, these small choices can help create more emotional space.

5. Make One Decision Tomorrow Easier

In addition to emotional overload, stress often builds through small moments of decision fatigue.

Fortunately, simple preparation can reduce that pressure.

Try helping your future self by:

Laying out your clothes

Preparing lunch in advance

Putting your keys in the same place

Setting reminders

Writing a short list

Organizing important items the night before

These small actions can create a greater sense of calm.

Moreover, they may be especially helpful for people with attention or executive functioning challenges.

River’s Bend offers Adult ADHD/ADD Assessments to help individuals better understand their strengths, challenges, and treatment options.

Sometimes, the thought “I just cannot get organized” may deserve a closer look.

6. Pay Attention to Your Coping Strategies

As you build healthier routines, it is also important to notice how you respond to stress.

Everyone uses coping strategies.

The important question is whether those strategies help you move through stress or simply avoid it.

Helpful coping strategies may include:

Exercise

Journaling

Therapy

Creative activities

Prayer or spiritual practices

Talking with trusted people

On the other hand, less helpful coping strategies may include:

Avoidance

Excessive screen time

Isolation

Increased alcohol use

Misusing substances

Overworking

If alcohol or other substances have become your main way of managing stress, it may be time to seek additional support.

River’s Bend offers:

Substance Abuse Evaluations

Health Professional Recovery Program services

These programs help individuals address substance use concerns in a safe and compassionate setting.

Most importantly, seeking help early can make a meaningful difference.

7. Ask for Help Before You Reach a Breaking Point

Finally, one of the most important habits is learning to ask for help before things become unbearable.

One of the most harmful myths about mental health is that you must wait until life becomes unbearable before asking for help.

You do not.

Support is not only for a crisis.

Sometimes, asking for support begins with a simple statement:

“I have been feeling anxious lately.”

“I am not coping as well as I used to.”

“I think I need someone to talk to.”

“I am worried about my drinking.”

“My teenager seems different.”

“I do not know exactly what I need, but something has to change.”

At River’s Bend, our services are designed to meet people where they are.

For example, you may be looking for Adult Mental Health and Substance Abuse Counseling Services.

You may need Psychiatric Services.

You may also need a higher level of care through Mental Health IOP or PHP.

In addition, River’s Bend offers specialized evaluations and an Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program for teens experiencing both mental health and substance use concerns.

You do not need to have every answer before reaching out.

You only need to take the first step.

Habits That Improve Mental Wellness Do Not Require Perfection

Ultimately, mental wellness is not about becoming the most productive version of yourself.

It is not about checking every box.

It is also not about getting everything right.

Instead, it is about paying attention to what supports you.

That may mean returning to helpful routines.

It may also mean giving yourself grace when life becomes difficult.

Likewise, it may mean recognizing when additional support could help you move forward.

One extra glass of water.

One walk around the block.

One earlier bedtime.

One honest conversation.

One therapy appointment.

One recovery meeting.

Each small action can matter.

Meaningful change rarely happens all at once.

More often, it develops through small moments that are easy to overlook.

When Small Habits No Longer Feel Manageable

Even so, there may be times when simple habits feel difficult.

If that happens, it does not mean you have failed.

Instead, it may mean you need more support.

River’s Bend serves individuals and families throughout Southeast Michigan. In addition, virtual appointments are available across the entire state of Michigan.

Our team supports people navigating:

Anxiety

Depression

Substance use concerns

ADHD

Recovery

Life transitions

Emotional distress

Healing does not require perfection.

Rather, it begins with one manageable step.

Sometimes, that step is asking for help.

Contact Our Care Team to Get Started

River’s Bend offers compassionate, evidence-based behavioral healthcare for individuals and families throughout Michigan.

Every June, Pride Month honors the history, resilience, and contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other LGBTQ+ individuals. It is a time to celebrate authenticity, raise awareness about ongoing challenges, and reaffirm the importance of acceptance and belonging.

Pride Month began in remembrance of the 1969 Stonewall Riots, a pivotal moment in the movement for LGBTQ+ rights.1 Today, Pride is both a celebration and a reminder that many LGBTQ+ individuals continue to face stigma, discrimination, and barriers to mental health care.

Why Pride Month Matters for Mental Health

Research consistently shows that LGBTQ+ individuals experience higher rates of anxiety, depression, substance use disorders, and suicidal thoughts compared to the general population. According to The Trevor Project, LGBTQ+ young people are significantly more likely to consider suicide, especially when they lack supportive environments.2

These disparities are not caused by sexual orientation or gender identity themselves. Rather, they are linked to experiences such as rejection, bullying, social isolation, and discrimination.3

The good news is that support makes a profound difference.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that acceptance from family, peers, schools, and communities can greatly reduce suicide risk and improve overall well-being.4

Why Pride Is Especially Important for Young People

Adolescence and young adulthood are periods of identity development, social comparison, and emotional growth. LGBTQ+ youth may face additional stress when they fear rejection or feel pressured to hide important parts of themselves.

Pride Month sends a powerful message: You belong. You are valued. Your identity deserves respect.

Even small gestures of support can help young people feel safer and less alone.

Small Ways to Show Support This June

Bruce Goldberg, River’s Bend President and co-owner, is a firm believer that healing from mental health and substance use disorders happens in community. Whether you identify as LGBTQ+ or not, there are meaningful ways to help lift others up.

Use a person’s chosen name and pronouns.

Listen without judgment.

Display a Pride flag or supportive message.

Speak up against hurtful comments.

Learn more about LGBTQ+ experiences.

Check in with a young person who may be struggling.

Share mental health resources and affirming support options.

These actions may seem simple, but they communicate acceptance and belonging.

When Community Supports Healing

Whether someone is managing anxiety, depression, trauma, or substance use, feeling connected to others is a powerful protective factor. Recovery is more sustainable when individuals know they are accepted and supported.

Pride Month reminds us that everyone deserves to be seen, respected, and encouraged.

Find Compassionate Support at River’s Bend

River’s Bend provides evidence-based outpatient treatment for mental health and substance use disorders in Troy and West Bloomfield, Michigan, with virtual options available throughout Michigan.

This June, let’s celebrate the strength of the LGBTQ+ community and remember that healing is possible when people feel safe, supported, and connected.

June is Men’s Health Month, a time to raise awareness about the physical and emotional well-being of men and boys.1 While conversations often focus on heart disease, cancer screenings, and exercise, mental health deserves equal attention.

Too many men struggle in silence.

Cultural expectations can send the message that men should be strong, self-reliant, and emotionally reserved. As a result, many avoid seeking help for depression, anxiety, trauma, and substance use disorders. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, millions of men experience mental health conditions each year, yet they are less likely than women to receive treatment.2

Our therapists at River’s Bend are committed to challenging the stigma by reminding individuals and families that mental health and substance use disorders do not have one particular “face.” They affect people of every age, profession, and background—including fathers, sons, executives, healthcare workers, veterans, and students.

The Link Between Mental Health and the Male Loneliness Epidemic

Researchers and public health experts have increasingly highlighted what many call the “male loneliness epidemic.” The U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory on Social Connection identifies loneliness and social isolation as significant threats to mental and physical health.

Men are often less likely to maintain close emotional relationships or discuss vulnerable feelings with friends. When stress, grief, trauma, or substance use develops, isolation can deepen.3

Loneliness may contribute to:

Depression and anxiety

Increased alcohol or drug use

Sleep problems

Relationship difficulties

Thoughts of suicide

Call out: Men die by suicide at significantly higher rates than women in the United States, underscoring the importance of connection and early support.4

Signs a Man You Love May Be Struggling

Mental health concerns do not always look like sadness. You may notice:

Increased irritability or anger

Withdrawal from family and friends

Changes in sleep or appetite

Working excessively

Increased alcohol or substance use

Loss of interest in hobbies

Physical complaints such as headaches or fatigue

How to Offer Support Without Causing Offense

Many people worry that bringing up mental health will be taken as criticism. In reality, a caring and nonjudgmental approach can open the door to meaningful conversation.

Try saying:

“You’ve seemed stressed lately. How are you doing?”

“I care about you and want to support you.”

“You don’t have to handle this alone.”

“Talking to someone can be a sign of strength.”

Focus on what you have observed rather than labeling the person.

Small Steps Men Can Take

Progress does not require a dramatic change. One small step can begin the healing process.

Reach out to one trusted friend

Schedule a therapy consultation

Attend a support group

Reduce alcohol use

Commit to one healthy routine

How to Focus on Presence Over Perfection

The holidays have a way of magnifying everything joy, grief, connection, and pressure. For families with a loved one in recovery, this season often carries a quiet ache: How do we celebrate when everything feels different?

If this is your first sober Christmas with a loved one…

If someone is in treatment, estranged, or newly absent due to loss…

If you’re carrying hope in one hand and heartbreak in the other…

You’re not alone. And you’re not doing it wrong.

Healing doesn’t follow a Hallmark script, and at River’s Bend, we believe that recovery, like the holidays, doesn’t have to look perfect to be meaningful. In fact, it rarely is.

Our blog, ‘The Holidays Can Be Beautiful… and Overwhelming,’ reminds us that it’s normal to feel many emotions at once this time of year. Joy and sorrow can coexist. Stillness can be brave. And presence genuine, grounded presence is often more potent than any grand gesture or perfect plan.

Recovery Isn’t Linear. Neither Are Holidays

One of the most painful myths we carry into this season is that recovery should be “better by now” neater, easier, complete. The truth is, recovery from mental health or substance use challenges rarely follow a straight line. Some years are stable. Others stretch everyone involved.1

This is especially true during holidays, when expectations run high, old wounds can resurface, and families may struggle to balance support with self-protection.2

Let go of the idea that things should look the way they always have. The best gift you can offer your loved one, and yourself, is acceptance of where you are right now.

Quiet Support > Perfect Solutions

When your loved one is navigating recovery, or when you’re facing grief or disconnection, showing up quietly and compassionately matters more than ever. Here are three ways to support without trying to manage or fix:

Notice Instead of Manage

Hypervigilance can feel like love, yet it’s often fueled by anxiety. Instead of trying to anticipate every mood shift or trigger, practice simply noticing.3

“I noticed you stepped away for a bit, want to take a breather together?”

In How Repeated Trauma Impacts Our Mental Health, we explore how trauma often teaches the brain to expect criticism, conflict, or chaos. Noticing without judgment helps break that cycle and offers your loved one a sense of safety.

Affirm Instead of Advise

Even well-meaning advice can backfire when someone is emotionally raw. Offering affirmation and empathy keeps the focus on connection, not control.

Try: “I’m proud of how you’re showing up, even when it’s hard.”

A single sentence of genuine encouragement can interrupt shame, strengthen resilience, and remind your loved one they’re not alone.

Release the Pressure of ‘Normal’

You don’t have to recreate past holidays to create meaningful ones. In fact, trying to do so may cause more distress, especially if it ignores your current reality. Our blog, ‘Building a Recovery Plan That Supports Long-Term Success,’ emphasizes how intentional changes in environment and routine can help protect early recovery and emotional stability. That includes letting go of unrealistic traditions.

Reach out for help

Reframing Traditions as a Form of Healing

When life changes, traditions often need to change too. This isn’t a failure, it’s an opportunity a chance to create meaning that reflects your current emotional needs, family structure, or healing process.

Whether your family is navigating a first Christmas after treatment, grief, estrangement, or major life transitions like divorce, or death, redefining what “togetherness” looks like can be an act of deep resilience.

If you or your loved one is currently in an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or Partial Hospitalization (PHP), small changes in holiday routines matter. They create emotional safety, reduce exposure to triggers, and support the structure and coping strategies introduced in therapy.

Why Changing Traditions Helps Heal the Brain

From a clinical standpoint, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) teaches that our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are deeply connected. Familiar rituals tied to stress, addiction, or loss can trigger painful associations. 4Left unaddressed, these triggers can reinforce distorted thoughts like:

“This will never feel okay again.”

“Everything is ruined.”

“The holidays are pointless now.”

When we intentionally create new rituals, especially ones grounded in compassion or connection, we introduce new emotional experiences. Over time, these experiences help rewire neural pathways, allowing the brain to associate the holidays with calm, meaning, or safety again.5

5 Ideas for New Traditions Based on Family Dynamics

You’re Supporting a Loved One in Early Recovery

Old routines (like alcohol at dinner or chaotic family gatherings) may not be supportive.

Try:

Sober brunch instead of dinner: Opt for morning light, a smaller guest list, and alcohol-free options like cider or mocktails.

Recovery gratitude jar: Each person writes one thing they’re proud of or grateful for in themselves or each other. Read them aloud on Christmas Eve or Day.

Grounding walk after dinner: Help reset everyone’s nervous system with movement and the benefits of nature.

These simple shifts communicate support without drawing unwanted attention to your loved one’s recovery. They also help everyone present co-regulate and feel safer.

This Is the First Holiday After a Loss or Estrangement

Whether you’re grieving a death, honoring someone in treatment, or navigating emotional distance, this absence can feel enormous.

Try:

Memory candle ritual: Light a candle every evening, inviting family to share memories or moments of connection with the person.

Acts of kindness in their honor: Volunteer, donate to a meaningful cause, or help a neighbor. Turning pain into purpose can ease the ache.

Create a playlist for this season: Choose music that matches your emotional tone nostalgic, gentle, spiritual, even bittersweet. Music regulates the limbic system and helps process emotion.

Changing how you mark the season doesn’t erase what was; it simply changes how you perceive it. It honors what still matters.

You Have Young Kids and Everything Feels Fragile

Children are often the reason we try to “keep things the same.” But kids are resilient when caregivers lead with honesty and warmth, not forced cheer.

Try:

“Choose Your Own Tradition” night: Let kids pick a meal, movie, or activity. It gives them ownership in a time that might otherwise feel disorienting.

Feelings ornaments: Create a craft station where kids design ornaments representing how they feel this season. Labeling emotions helps build emotional literacy.

Healing advent calendar: Instead of candy, fill each day with small moments of joy or connection like sharing compliments, drawing together, or making a mini “kindness mission.”

When you validate kids’ emotions and give them space to process, they learn that joy and grief can coexist safely.

You’re Co-Parenting or Facing a Recent Divorce

Post-divorce holidays can be emotionally loaded for parents and children.6 Rather than forcing traditions into old molds, consider:

Create “Holiday Eve” celebrations: If kids aren’t with you on the holiday, plan a meaningful evening beforehand enjoy your favorite foods, wear your pajamas, or gather around a fire.

Establish new rituals unique to your home: A special breakfast, silly hat photos, or story night can ground kids in your presence.

Sensory transitions between homes: Use a consistent scent (like essential oil), playlist, or grounding activity when kids move between households. This supports nervous system regulation and gives the brain a predictable cue.

New traditions help everyone feel less like something is missing and more like something new is being created.

You Don’t Know What to Create Because You Feel Lost

You don’t have to invent something elaborate. Start small:

What feels emotionally safe this year?

What’s something gentle we could try?

What tradition no longer serves us, and what could replace it?

Permit yourself to experiment. If something doesn’t feel right, you can change it next year. The key is intention, not perfection.

Not Everyone Will Be Ready for Change

Even with the best intentions, not all family members will be on board with adjusting traditions, especially those who find comfort in routine or resist acknowledging what’s changed. That’s okay.

Change often starts with one person making a small shift. You don’t have to convince everyone. When you model flexibility, warmth, and emotional honesty, it can open space for others to do the same, when they’re ready.

You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

At River’s Bend, we support individuals in recovery, and the families who love them. Whether you’re navigating emotional minefields, rethinking traditions, or trying to stay grounded while your loved one heals, you deserve support too.
