From Recovery to Leadership

In the world of behavioral healthcare, few leaders blend clinical excellence with personal courage as seamlessly as Amy Buchanan, MA. As Practice Manager of River’s Bend PC, Amy is the operational force behind the scenes—and the compassionate voice many clients first hear when they reach out for help.

Her impact stretches far beyond schedules and spreadsheets. A woman in long-term recovery herself, Amy brings a rare and powerful combination of administrative expertise and lived experience to River’s Bend’s outpatient clinics in Troy and West Bloomfield.

Leadership with Lived Experience

Amy’s path to leadership is rooted in resilience. She first shared her recovery story just weeks after treatment at a Unite to Face Addiction–Michigan event. That moment—met with a standing ovation—launched her advocacy career, leading her to:

Speak at the Michigan Capitol on addiction recovery and stigma

Mentor individuals and families navigating early recovery

Appear in the award-winning documentary My Secret is My Story

Partner with organizations like FAN (Face Addiction Now) and The Amber Reineck House

Her message is always grounded in hope and humility: “My story doesn’t define me—but it reminds me who I’m here to help.”

Creating Safe Space for Recovery—One Call at a Time

In her role at River’s Bend, Amy is often the first point of contact for people in crisis. Whether she’s answering the phones, supporting staff, or comforting a parent, she meets each moment with deep empathy and zero judgment.

Amy’s work includes:

Training front desk and support staff in trauma-informed care

Providing peer-informed support to clients and caregivers

Managing daily operations across both River’s Bend locations

Coordinating outreach and partnerships with community groups

She doesn’t carry the title of peer recovery coach—but she embodies the values: dignity, presence, and nonjudgmental support. “Sometimes people just need to hear, ‘You’re not alone,’” she says. “And I can say that with my whole heart.”

Administrative Backbone. Community Voice.

With a master’s in administration and over two decades of leadership experience in school systems, nonprofits, and clinics, Amy bridges clinical care with operational excellence. Her focus is always client-centered, even when working behind the scenes.

Her community work includes:

Collaborating with school districts on youth mental health outreach

Advocating for recovery resources across Oakland and Macomb Counties

Speaking to families, students, and lawmakers about the real face of recovery

Amy balances logistics with lived empathy, demonstrating that behavioral healthcare is strongest when it includes people who’ve walked the path themselves.

Areas of Focus

Behavioral health clinic operations & systems

Trauma-informed frontline staff training

Peer-informed family and client support

Advocacy and stigma reduction speaking

Recovery outreach in schools and communities

A Leader Who Makes Recovery Personal

Amy Buchanan leads with the kind of authenticity that can’t be taught. Her journey from early recovery to administrative leadership is more than a personal milestone—it’s a guiding light for others seeking healing, hope, and connection.
