Clinical Team Spotlight: Chanel Graham, MSN, PMHNP

Championing Relationship-Centered Psychiatry in Metro Detroit

A New Era of Psychiatric Care in Southeast Michigan

At River’s Bend PC, we believe that great care starts with great clinicians, and Chanel Graham, MSN, PMHNP, is setting a new standard for psychiatric services across Metro Detroit and Oakland County. As a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Chanel combines clinical precision with deeply human care, creating a space for healing that is empowering, inclusive, and profoundly personal.

Her clinical focus includes treating depression, anxiety, trauma, and substance use disorders, with outcomes that speak for themselves: reduced symptoms, fewer crises, increased client engagement, and high patient satisfaction.

Relationship-Centered, Culturally Responsive Care

What sets Chanel apart is her relationship-first approach. Every session begins not with a prescription, but with a conversation.

Call out: “Psychiatric care is a collaborative effort,” Chanel says. “My goal is to create psychological safety so clients feel heard—and empowered—to participate in shaping their treatment.”

Chanel’s model is built on cultural humility, trust-building, and shared decision-making. She integrates:

  • In-depth cultural assessments
  • Functional and emotional evaluations
  • Treatment plans grounded in lived realities and evolving readiness

She actively confronts mistrust in psychiatry, especially among historically underserved communities, by taking the time to listen, educate, and build authentic relationships.

A Voice for Equity and Access

Chanel is not only a clinician but also a mental health equity advocate. She participates in community events like ViewFest Mental Health Awareness Festival, collaborates with Black Psychiatrists of America, and holds active membership in the American Nurses Association.

Through these platforms, she works to:

  • Reduce stigma around mental health in marginalized communities
  • Increase access to inclusive, equitable psychiatric care
  • Promote trauma-informed and culturally competent practices across Michigan

Team-Based Treatment That Changes Lives

Chanel’s practice is built on seamless collaboration with therapists, social workers, and case managers. At River’s Bend’s Troy and West Bloomfield locations, she engages in:

  • Weekly interdisciplinary clinical meetings
  • Shared EHR communication and documentation
  • Integrated safety planning for clients in crisis

In one case involving a young man with trauma and suicidal ideation, Chanel’s team-based approach resulted in improved daily functioning and emotional regulation, a testament to how collective care saves lives.

From Cardiac Nurse to Psychiatric Leader

Before entering psychiatry, Chanel worked in cardiac critical care, where she saw firsthand how mental health challenges directly impacted physical health. That experience ignited her passion for integrated, whole-person care, a mission she now brings to every client she sees.

Her vision for the future? A world where mental health is integrated into every primary care setting, with early intervention prioritized over crisis response.

Clinical Areas of Focus

  • Depression, anxiety, trauma, and co-occurring disorders
  • Trauma-informed psychiatric evaluations
  • Culturally competent care for Black and marginalized communities
  • Medication management and integrative treatment planning
  • Advocacy for mental health equity and early intervention

At River’s Bend, Chanel is more than a provider, she’s a movement-builder. She’s creating a model of care that is rooted in trust, sustained by equity, and inspired by humanity.
